DELIVERY ROUTINE

It is important that you make most of your shot decisions before you walk onto the mat so all you have to concentrate on is your delivery and weight.

Keep the timing from walking onto the mat to the time you deliver the bowl the same – less time probably means you are rushing the shot, slower time probably means you are undecided or over complicating things on the mat.

Before stepping on the mat:

  • Decide the shot you are going to play – visualise it.
  • Hold bowl correctly (thumb on side), check the bias.
  • Decide your line either from the bank, breaking point of the bowl, or 5 metres from the mat – whatever works for you best.

Stepping onto the mat:

  • Step onto the mat from the left for forehand, from the right for backhand (vice versa for left handers).
  • Have left foot in the middle of the mat (right foot for left handers).
  • Your body should be square to the line you are bowling.
  • Keep your head still, good, controlled backswing and follow through (don’t flick at the end of your delivery, or at the last moment).
  • Release the bowl parallel to your left toe (right toe for lefthanders).
  • Keep the time you spend on the mat consistent (as outlined in the introduction above).
